Kokin

My name is Makiko and I’m originally from Aichi, Japan. My creativity comes from my love for nature and the beautiful Japanese culture.
My slow fashion label - Kokin is all about giving pre-loved kimonos new life. This idea came to me when I inherited a huge pile of vintage kimonos from my grandmother. Tons of kimonos are going into waste each year and I wanted to do something about it, so I started upcycling kimonos into modern clothing that is comfortable, stylish and better suits in the modern world. To minimise negative impact on the environment, I source all textiles secondhand and incorporate deadstock fabrics from local suppliers. My designs are also inspired by the coastal fashion of Australia.
